Taoyuan Man Arrested for Killing and Dismembering Wife

A man was arrested in Taoyuan after his daughter found her mother’s head and other body parts distributed in bags and boxes in a house in Taoyuan City yesterday, May 26.

Yesterday, at around noon, the couple’s daughter visited the house and was shocked to find a pool of blood on the floor of the bathroom on the second floor. Her father, Mr Chen, told her that he had cut his foot. Later the same day, the daughter returned to find the blood had been cleaned up. Her father was drunk, and raving incoherently, and Ms Chen took him to the hospital.

Ms Chen then returned to the house and made the grisly find on the second floor.

Ms Chen, holding a black plastic bag, entered the Longan Police Station yesterday evening, and handed it to police saying, “this is my mother.” Police opened the bag and saw a human head, with short, curly hair, stained with blood.

A search of the house uncovered 2 boxes, and two plastic bags filled with body parts hidden behind a mattress on the second floor, and one bag of viscera stored in a refrigerator.

Mr Chen, 67, was very drunk when arrested, and at first denied killing his 68 year-old wife, Ms Jian. However, in the early hours of the morning, after he had somewhat sobered up, Chen agreed to see his daughter, and confessed to murdering his wife. The couple had argued over a dispute about the distribution of property, following their divorce, he said.

The couple had been married for more than 30 years, but in recent years, Chen had begun to suffer from auditory hallucinations, and had become mentally unstable, according to neighbors interviewed by Apple Daily. Ms Jian and the couple’s two adult children had moved out, they said.

Chen and Jian had divorced in April 2016, then remarried in August last year. Four days ago, they decided to divorce again. The couple lived separately, but Ms Jian often visited to bring and prepare meals for her estranged husband.

Mr Chen was taken to the house by police at around 2:30pm this afternoon, May 27, to recount the events. According to Chen’s confession, on May 25, Ms Jian had brought her husband breakfast, and they had an argument over ownership of the house and other property following their planned divorce. Mr Chen took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Jian in the abdomen, then grabbed a hammer and killed her.

Chen then cut her body into pieces, as one would butcher a pig, according to reports including Apple Daily, and placed them in boxes and bags, sprinkling lime of the body parts in order to prevent smells and insect infestation. Chen had also burned the victim’s clothes in an iron bucket on the third floor.
