Taiwan’s rainy season expected to start Sunday with stationary front, tropical disturbance

Meteorologists say that Taiwan is about to enter the summer rainy season with the first stationary (plum rain) front forecast to descend on northern Taiwan Sunday, May 1, combined with a tropical disturbance approaching from the south.

Peng Chi-ming (彭啟明), General-Manager of WeatherRisk said that northern Taiwan will come under the influence of a stationary front Sunday, along with a northeast wind turning the weather rainy and cool, with the temperature dropping to 17°C to 20°C. Furthermore, a low pressure system in the South China Sea currently “exploding with lightening” is expected to bring moist air northward Sunday, increasing rainfall to Taiwan as it interacts with the stationary front.

The weather on Sunday and Monday will be relatively unstable, and similar weather will continue Tuesday and Wednesday with slightly less rainfall before returning hot, sunny weather Thursday, according to the WeatherRisk forecast.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau forecast appears to agree with the WeatherRisk analysis. CWB meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said that it is necessary to continuously observe the possible rain caused by the interaction of frontal and tropical disturbance Sunday and Monday.
