Hualien Fisher Chief Bashed Unconscious

The chief of Hualien County Fishermen’s Association was found severely beaten and unconscious after two car loads of masked men took to him with iron rods and baseball bats outside a convenience store in Hualien County, October 16, 2016. The Fisherman Association chairman, Jian Guang-tai (簡光臺) was beaten by the thugs after stopping at a convenience store at around 3:00pm. Police say they are investigating the incident.

Crane Collapse Blamed on Approaching Typhoon

A 700 ton mobile crane collapsed onto buildings at a port in Hualien this morning. Operators blame high winds generated by an approaching typhoon. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the incident. The crane operator managed to jump out of the cabin, and there were no tourists on the whale-watching wharf, as cruises were canceled due to the approach of Typhoon Megi.

Electric Buses Brought into Service in Hualien

Seven electric buses have been put into service in Hualien on the National Dong Hwa University and Taroko Gorge National Park routes. Three more units are expected to be added to the fleet before the end of the year. The buses were put to the test by being driven from the west coast to Hualien.
