Suspects arrested after man critically injured in parcel bomb explosion

Two suspects have been arrested after an investigation into a blast that critically injured the owner of an interior design company in Kaohsiung City, yesterday, May 15.

Shortly after noon yesterday, an explosion blasted out the glass windows and doors of an interior design company office on Minkang Road, Gushan District, leaving the owner of the company, a 53-year-old man named Feng, critically injured with burns to more than 60% of his body.

Initial media reports reported a gas explosion, but the police investigation quickly pointed to a suspected parcel bomb after fragments of an explosive device and powder residue was found at the scene.

While Mr Feng was unable to talk to police due to the seriousness of his injuries, an employee, Ms Lee, told investigators that she had picked up a parcel addressed to Mr Feng at the door of the office when she arrived at work that morning.

Lee placed the parcel on a desk, and informed Feng when he arrived at the office. Lee left the office at 10:00am for a medical appointment.

At 12:20pm a blast destroyed two floors of office space, blowing out the glass windows and doors on both floors, and damaging a car parked outside the office.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a scene of destruction, with a lot of smoke, but fortunately, no fire. Mr Feng was found semi-conscious under a desk.

Police explosives experts found fragments of the parcel, fuse wires, and explosive residues.

Yesterday evening, police arrested a 40-year-old woman named Zhong (鐘) in Pingtung City. Early this morning, a man named Dai (戴) was arrested in Xizhi District, New Taipei City.

Investigators accessing street camera video records identified Dai as a person seen carrying the suspected parcel bomb, and placing it outside the interior design company office on the evening of May 14.

Zhong was identified as the person who drove Dai to the scene of the crime, then later took Dai to the HSR station.

While the investigation is ongoing, it is believed that Mr Feng and the suspects have an ongoing dispute involving an NT$10 million debt.
