Submachine Gun Among New Taipei City Arsenal

Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) officers arrested three men in New Taipei City yesterday and confiscated 8 guns including a Skorpion machine-pistol.

Police made the arrests after investigating a 46 year-old man named Zheng (鄭), who was suspected of trafficking in black market firearms. Police had been tipped off to the operation last month.

Yesterday afternoon, at around 4:00pm, police swooped on a construction company in Zhonghe District, where Zheng and his accomplices were believed to be making a transaction. The three men were found to be in possession of 5 guns. A search of their offices at an engineering company turned up three more guns.

The eight firearms were described as “modified,” suggesting that the weapons were originally replicas, or blank guns, modified to fire real bullets. The Skorpion sub-machine gun is a dual-use firearm that can be used as a pistol or shoulder-fired weapon and police said it could fetch an estimated NT$600,000 in the local firearms black market.

Four Zoraki 914, three Zoraki 925 pistols and 40 rounds of ammunition were also confiscated.
