Starlux takes delivery of second airliner: CEO flies it home

Starlux Airlines took delivery of its second Airbus A321neo in Hamburg, Germany, December 19, and Chairman Chang Kuo-wei personally took the helm and flew it back to Taiwan, arriving at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport this morning, December 23.

The aircraft, registered as B-58202, is the second of three A321s expected to start flying on three routes from January 23. Hands-on chairman Chang led a team to inspect the aircraft, seeing it through a test flight December 18 before taking delivery the following day.

The flight saw stops at Dubai, Da Nang, and Kaohsiung before arriving at Taoyuan at 7:58am.

Chang, 49, took delivery of the airline’s first A321neo in October, also flying it back to Taiwan. When asked if he would continue flying the planes home himself, he cheerfully said that he would personally inspect each delivery himself, and would personally take the helm to fly them back to Taiwan as long as he has the time.

The next aircraft is expected to be delivered in January, before maiden flights January 23, on three routes – to Macao, Da Nang, Vietnam, and Penang, Malaysia. Tickets on all three routes sold out in just 11 minutes after sales opened December 16.

Starlux Airlines has ordered a total of eight Airbus A321neo, 9 Airbus A350-900, and 8 Airbus A350-1000. After launching the first three routes in January, the Airline plans to expand to other Asian destinations before further expansion to Europe and North America from 2022.

The A321neo configured for Starlux comes with 8 business class, and 180 economy class seats, featuring personal in-flight entertainment touchscreens, usb ports, and free Wi-Fi (limited bandwidth in economy class, and unlimited in business class).
