Speed, wet weather factors in spate of car crashes: two fatal

Speeding drivers and wet roads led to a spate of car accidents in the last two days, including two high-speed crashes that left two dead and one critically injured.

One woman died and her husband was critically injured after a single-vehicle accident in Nantou City in the early hours of the morning, yesterday, February 3. The 38-year-old driver, named Shen, was driving from Nantou City towards Zhongxing Village when the vehicle carrying he and his wife crashed at high speed into a utility pole on a bend in the road at around 1:30 am. Police traffic accident investigators said that there was no sign of braking before the crash.

The couple were cut out of the mangled wreck of the vehicle and rushed to Changji Hospital, but Mrs Shen was without vital signs at the scene of the accident and was declared dead shortly after arrival. Mr Shen remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit. According to a Liberty Times report, the couple have two elementary-school-aged children who are now in the care of relatives.

While the cause of the accident is still under investigation, police said that traffic monitor footage showed that the driver was speeding, and the vehicle crashed directly into the utility pole.

In Taipei City a driver lost control of his vehicle on an off ramp of Zhongxiao Bridge at 12:26 am today, February 4. The car hit the guardrail and soundproofing wall of the off ramp and rolled over onto its roof. Police investigators say that the 50 meters the vehicle slid on its roof suggested that the driver, a 53-year-old man named Wu, was “not driving slowly” at the time of the accident.

Wu was pulled out of the vehicle unconscious and rushed to the hospital. Police are still awaiting the results of a blood test to determine if alcohol was a factor in the accident.

In Tamsui District, New Taipei City, a 26-year-old man, named Hsiao, lost control of his Lamborghini Huracan EVO Coupe V10 while negotiating a curve in wet weather at around 9:00 am yesterday. The sportscar collided with two parked vehicles, but fortunately nobody was injured in the accident.

Hsiao was tested and found not to have been affected by alcohol. One report noted that Hsiao had only taken delivery of the NT$6 million supercar in late December.
