Six illegal immigrants on the run after breaking out of detention facility

Six of 31 illegal immigrants who were intercepted off the coast of southern Taiwan three days ago have escaped from a detention facility in Taichung City, according to reports today, March 24.

Six of seven men being held in a room at a former coast guard camp were found missing when the room was checked at 7:00 am this morning, according to SETN.

An aluminium bar on a window had been forced open, allowing the six men to squeeze out of the window. However, the seventh man was too large to escape, according to United Daily News.

The six men are believed to have lived in Taiwan legally in the past, but had been deported and banned from reentry after breaching the conditions of their employment and residency. The suspects are said to have girlfriends, friends, or relatives in Taiwan.

Police are tracing the escapees’ contacts as part of their search for the men.

Coast Guard officials rushed to reassure the public that the men are not a believed to be a public health threat. All the 31 illegal entries have been checked and monitored for symptoms of coronavirus infection.

Police urged the public to keep an eye out for the suspects and to report any suspicious persons on the 118, or 110 hotlines..
