Rural Pingtung County townships hit by tornado

A tornado formed over land in Pingtung County this afternoon, causing damage in at least two rural townships Fortunately no serious injuries were reported.

At around 3:00pm the tornado suddenly formed and swept through Linbian Township and Nanzhou Township, knocking over trees, scooters, trucks, and store signs, as residents ran for cover.

Roofing iron was torn off buildings, and in one case, a sheet-metal residence was picked up and tossed onto the road.

Flying debris damaged power lines in the district causing temporary loss of power to some neighborhoods. National electricity supplier Taipower reported that up to 7,400 households had been affected.

Taipower reported that by 6:00pm, only 1,164 households were without power, and complete power is expected to be restored by around 11:00pm tonight.

An assessment by local township officials revealed that 11 houses had been damaged in Linbian Township, and 20 in Nanzhou Township. No residents required emergency accommodation, but food, drinking water, and water for bathing is being provided by the local government.

A contingent of 50 troops from the army is expected to arrive in Linbian Township to help with cleanup operations tomorrow morning, while 30 troops have been assigned to Nanzhou Township.
