Rogue Wave Death-toll reaches 5, Three still Missing
The number of fatalities caused by large waves generated by typhoon Jebi rose today after two bodies were found off the coast of Ilan County and another woman drowned this morning.
Seven people were washed into the ocean in three separate incidents in Ilan County yesterday afternoon when a series of large waves suddenly surged over the beach at Nanao and Neiwan.
In one of the incidents, an eight year-old girl cried for help after being dragged out by a wave at Neiwan Beach. A man went to her rescue and got her back to shore only be dragged away himself and drowned.
In the other two incidents, members of two groups riding quad bikes were hit by the waves. Six people were dragged into the water, of which 4 bodies have been found and two remain missing.
The body a a woman named Wei was found 1.6 nautical miles from shore early this morning, while the body of the woman’s 10 year-old son was found shortly before noon. Another female body was found a short time later but the identity has not been confirmed.
At around 11:00am this morning, a 60 year-old woman was walking on the beach at Lover’s Bay when waves hit and dragged her out to sea. At 11:56am rescuers located the woman around 50 meters from shore without signs of breathing or heartbeat. The woman did not respond to CPR and was declared dead after arrival at the hospital.
In New Taipei City, a 52 year-old man remains missing after being hit by waves while fishing from the shore last night. Witnesses called the coast guard but they were unable to mount a sea search due to heavy seas. After a night-long shore search, a sea patrol was launched early this morning.
