Road repair worker run over by road roller: Driver drunk

A road repair worker in Taichung City died after he was accidentally run over by a road roller driven by a colleague who was over the legal blood alcohol limit, yesterday, December 29.

At around 7:00 pm, a 36-year-old man named Ding (丁) was working on a road repair site on Xiang-shang Road in Taichung West District, when he put the vehicle into reverse, accidentally running over his 61-year-old co-worker, named Zou (鄒). Other workers screamed out, alerting Ding to stop the vehicle.

Paramedics from the Taichung City Fire Department found that Zou had suffered extensive injuries, mostly concentrated on the lower body, and had already lost vital signs at the scene of the accident. Zou was rushed to China Medical University Hospital by ambulance, and although breathing and heartbeat was restored for a short time, Zou eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Mr Ding was breath-tested by police and found to have exceeded the 0.25mg/liter BrAC alcohol limit for drivers. Zou will face charges of endangering the public, and professional negligence causing death.

The Labor Affairs Bureau is also investigating breaches of occupational safety and health regulations.
