Remains of Missing Mountain Climber Found

The remains of Taipei firefighter Li Ying-xun (李盈勳), who went missing in a mountainous region of Hualian County March 1 were found yesterday July 20.

The skeletal remains were found at the bottom of a 100 meter drop by an aboriginal hunter, Yang Zhong-zheng (楊忠正) who was guiding a civilian team searching for Li.

Firefighters from Taipei and Hualian, and army personnel spent 20 days searching for Li in March this year. During the search in precipitous terrain and under difficult weather conditions, several searchers suffered injuries from rockfalls, and one man died after being swept away while crossing a stream.

Yesterday at around 4:00pm, leader of the search party Mr Lai (賴銓淵) called Hualian Fire Bureau to report finding the remains. The search party was one of several “unofficial” expeditions who have made searches since March.

According to reports, Mr Li’s body was found head down, feet up, and his helmet was dangling from a branch about 10 meters above.

A helicopter was dispatched this morning to recover the remains.
