Police seize submachine gun in Taichung City

A man in Taichung City has been charged for offenses under the Control of Guns, Ammunition, and Knives Act after police found a Czech-made submachine gun in his possession.

Taichung City Police Department Criminal investigation Corps said that during a drug trafficking investigation they had received information that a man named Ho was armed with a submachine gun.

Police obtained a search warrant and pulled Ho’s vehicle over on Chaoma Road in Xitun District. A search of Ho’s car turned up a  Škorpion vz. 61 submachine gun, two magazines, and 38 bullets.

Police said that the  Škorpion vz. 61, made in Czechoslovakia, has a firing rate of 850 bullets per minute and is used by armed police security forces and anti-terrorist police units in some countries. The estimated black market price in Taiwan is NT$600,000 to NT$800,000.

Ho told police that he had taken delivery of the gun six years ago from a man who is now deceased. Ho claimed that he had never used the gun, and only kept it as a collector’s item.

Ho does not have previous convictions for weapons or drug offences, and the Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office allowed him to be released on NT$20,000 bail.
