Police officers help family after father of 5 sent to prison

Police officers who went to a man’s home after he failed to turn up to serve a prison sentence found a family struggling to survive, and decided to pitch in with blankets and food.

When the District Prosecutor asked the man, Mr Wen, why he hadn’t turned up to serve his sentence, Wen replied that he had five children and a wife to look after. The family depended on a welfare subsidy of a little over NT$10,000 per month, and there was nobody else to take care of the children after he goes into detention.

Two police officers from Hengxi Police Station in Sanxia District went to Wen’s house to check his story and found that Wen’s wife and children all shared one quilt. The officers overheard one of the children saying, “Mom, it’s so cold to sleep at night.”

The two police officers immediately went out and purchased five warm blankets and delivered them to the family. Later they came back with boxes of food.

When Deputy-Director of the police station learned of the situation, he commended the police officers and contacted the social welfare bureau to coordinate further assistance for the family.
