Police officer shot in chest arrests shooter before going to hospital

A police officer didn’t let a bullet through the chest stop him from arresting a suspect who violated traffic regulations in Yilan County yesterday, August 2.

The 29-year-old police officer, named Tsai, was not wearing a bulletproof vest when performing traffic duties in Toucheng Township between 10:00 pm and 12:00 am last night.

At around 11:50 pm, Tsai spotted a man on a scooter making an illegal right turn at a traffic light. Tsai pursued the motorcyclist for around 500 meters before the suspect finally pulled over.

The 57-year-old scooter rider, named Lu, argued with officer Tsai before taking a pistol out of the helmet compartment and shooting Tsai in the chest.

Tsai responded by restraining Lu and putting him in handcuffs before other officers arrived in support. Tsai then collapsed exhausted, and was rushed to hospital.

Surgeons found that the bullet had penetrated Tsai’s chest and passed through the right lung. Tsai remained conscious throughout his ordeal and underwent surgery in the early hours of the morning to remove the bullet. Tsai’s condition is reported to be stable, non-life threatening, and he is expected to remain in hospital for around three days for observation.
