Police hunting for suspect who hacked restaurant owner down in the street in Taichung City

Police are searching for a man who injured the owner of a buffet restaurant with dozens of knife wounds in a frenzied attack in Taichung City this morning, August 18.

According to witnesses, the 56-year-old restaurant owner, named Hsieh, had just opened his buffet-style restaurant for lunch at 11:00 am when a man arrived on a motorcycle and attacked him with a knife.

Hsieh was standing standing outside the restaurant in Dali District, when the man wearing a white shirt, black shorts, and an open-faced motorcycle helmet suddenly approached him and stabbed him, according to reports.

Hsieh fled into the restaurant, but the assailant followed with the bloody knife, sending customers scattering in fear. Hsieh then exited via a back alley with the knifeman in hot pursuit.

Hsieh was finally cornered by the assailant outside the door of a residence and viciously attacked.

By the time police arrived at 11:17 am, the suspect had fled. Hsieh was rushed to Asia University Affiliated Hospital, and was conscious, but seriously injured with dozens of stab wounds on his shoulders, forearms and in his back.

Police are searching for a 62-year-old suspect named Lee. According to Mr Hsieh’s brother, Lee had been a regular customer of the restaurant in the past.

However, Lee had repeatedly touched Mr Hsieh on the bottom until Hsieh was unable to bear it and finally said harsh words to Mr Lee around two months ago. Lee had not been seen at the restaurant since, until he showed up with the knife this morning.

Police are concentrating their search efforts in a mountainous area in the vicinity of Taiping District.
