Police fire warning shots after drunk driver crashes into café, resists arrest

Taichung City police fired two warning shots before arresting a drunk driver who crashed into a café while attempting to evade a roadside check this morning, May 15.

Police on patrol in North District attempted to pull over a driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the intersection of Wuquan Road and Gongyuan Road at 9:10 am. However, the driver refused to stop, and sped away from the police.

In the interests of public safety, police did not chase the suspect driver, but attempted to follow at a safe distance. On Zhonghua Road Section 2, the driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a Louisa Coffee café.

When police arrived, the driver then refused to surrender and walked towards the police officers in a threatening manner. One officer fired two warning shots in the air before the suspect surrendered and got down on his knees.

The driver was identified as a 31-year-old man, named Ho. Ho was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.23mg/l. A search of Ho’s vehicle turned up two kitchen knives, two folding knives, a machete, and a watermelon knife.

Ho was turned over to the District Prosecutor’s Office to face charges of endangering the public. Police are currently investigating if Ho is involved in other crimes.
