Police fire 6 shots in pursuit of suspect in New Taipei City

Police officers fired six shots at the tires of a vehicle after a suspect drove at them and escaped from a traffic stop in Banciao District, New Taipei City, yesterday, December 3.

Police officers from the Jiangcui Police Station approached the driver of a vehicle that was illegally stopped in a no standing zone on Wenhua Road at around 4:00 pm. However, when police asked the driver to show his ID, he stepped on the gas and sped away. Police on motor scooters chased the vehicle for a short distance until the driver was forced to stop behind cars at a red light.

In order to evade police, the driver then put his car into reverse, knocking over the police scooters, and leaving the officers to chase him on foot. Police fired 6 shots at the tires of the car, but the driver managed to escape.

At 4:55 pm, the suspect’s vehicle, with a flat front tire, was found abandoned under Wanban Bridge, around two kilometers from the site of the chase. Police investigators identified the suspect as a 41-year-old man, named Du. Using surveillance camera footage, investigators discovered that after Du abandoned the vehicle, he had taken a taxi to his residence in Zhongli District, Taoyuan City.

Police handed Du over to the District Prosecutor’s Office to be charged for endangering the public, damage, and obstructing an officer in discharge of duties.
