“Plum rain” rainy season front expected to bring significant rain starting Saturday

Taiwan will begin to be affected by the first rainy season Meiyu front starting Saturday, bringing significant rainfall that will help to relieve the current drought, according to meteorologist Der-Romg Wu (吳德榮), writing in his column Boss Weather News for SETN.

The former Central Weather Bureau Forecasting Center director said that the stationary front that affected Taiwan Sunday and Monday, has now weakened and moved northward. There is still a chance of brief, isolated showers or thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous areas in the afternoon.

Tomorrow and Friday Taiwan will remain sunny and hot with the possibility of brief showers in mountain areas in the afternoon.

Starting Saturday, May 29, Taiwan will gradually enter a rainy season pattern with a “typical Meiyu front” hovering from north to south. The quasi-stationary front over northern coastal waters on Saturday and Sunday, and over northern land areas Monday to Wednesday will create unstable atmospheric conditions conducive to the development of small to medium-scale weather systems, and there is a chance of “severe weather” including lightning strikes, strong winds, instantaneous heavy rain, and hail.

According to Wu’s analysis, a large amount of rainfall is expected: enough to help alleviate extreme water shortages currently affecting Taiwan.
