Overturned tanker spills sulfuric acid on coastal highway

Chemical cleanup units have been dispatched from Keelung City and New Taipei City after a tanker carrying sulfuric acid overturned while negotiating a bend on the coastal highway in Ruifang District.

According to traffic police, the tanker driven by a 47-year-old man named Liao veered into oncoming traffic lanes and overturned at around 6:30 am this morning at the 79.7 kilometer mark.

The driver was not injured in the accident, and managed to climb out of the vehicle on his own.

However, a large amount of sulfuric acid leaked from the tank.

Police set up traffic control around the overturned vehicle while waiting for Fire Bureau chemical disaster response units to arrive.
