One of three critically injured marines dead after boat capsizes

One of three marines left in a critical condition after an inflatable boat flipped during a drill on June 3 died in the early hours of this morning, June 5.

Seven officers and troops of the Marine Corps 99th Brigade, 2nd Battalion were thrown into the water when an inflatable boat overturned in rough seas off the coast of Kaohsiung, Friday.

Four of the crew members were injured, with three suffering life-threatening injuries.

The marines were participating in landing drills ahead of the annual Hanguang military exercise beginning July 13.

One of the three critically injured, Tsai Bo-yu ( 蔡博宇 ) was declared dead at 12:36 am.

Tsai, 26, was missing after the accident, and found two hours later. Tsai had no heartbeat at the time of arrival at the hospital.

President Tsai Ing-wen expressed great regret for this and has asked the Ministry of Defense to investigate the cause of the accident as soon as possible to avoid regrettable incidents in the future.

President Tsai expressed her condolences to Tsai Bo-yu’s family. “At the same time, I would like to express my highest respect and gratitude to all the brothers and sisters of the National Army for their sacrifice for the county,” Tsai said.
