One dead, nine injured after car plows into Taiwan tour group in Shanghai
One man died, and nine people were injured, one critically, after a driver lost control of his car and plowed into a group of Taiwanese tourists on a sidewalk in Shanghai, today, February 3.
According to reports in United Daily News and SETN, a group consisting of 31 people on the second day of an eight-day tour of China were walking on Taikang Road at around 9:00am, on their way to a popular tourist site, when a BMW sedan mounted the sidewalk and crashed into the group.
A 45-year-old Taiwanese man named Wang (王) lost vital signs at the scene of the accident and was declared dead after being taken to hospital. Another member of the group is in critical condition, while two were hospitalized with moderate injuries. Six people were slightly injured and discharged from hospital after treatment.
The tour organizer, Lion Travel, issued a press release today that said that the tour group, consisting of 31 people and a tour guide, had departed Taiwan yesterday, and had encountered an accident today with 10 casualties.
The travel company said that it had launched an emergency response, and has sent representatives to the scene to help the victims of the accident, inform their families in Taiwan, and assist family members to travel to China.
The Mainland Tourism Bureau, and the Shanghai Office of the Taiwan Affairs Department have also sent staff to assist the affected travelers.
A 31-year-old man named Zhao (趙) who was driving the BMW involved in the accident was arrested by police.
