Oil tanker listing in Port of Kaohsiung after collision with breakwater
A 42,000 ton oil tanker began to take on water after colliding with a breakwater at the Port of Kaohsiung and damaging its hull, but there is little chance of oil pollution port authorities say.
According to reports today, February 4, the Danish-flagged oil products tanker TORM EMILIE (IMO: 9277785) was entering the port on Tuesday, February 1, when it collided with the south dike breakwater, causing a hull breach, the harbor bureau said.
The outer shell of the hull was damaged, causing water to enter the hull, but after an inspection it was determined that there is no chance of an oil leak. The ship was listing 14 degrees, and now is listing at 9 degrees, according to reports.
The ship was urgently berthed at the Intercontinental Phase II Wharf and oil booms were set up around the vessel as a precaution. CNPC has agreed to allow the tanker to berth at Pier 104 to be unloaded. Unloading is expected to take around two and a half days, after which the ship will undergo maintenance and repair.
