No news is good news: Ever Given passes through Suez Canal

Taiwan’s Evergreen Shipping Company’s massive container ship Ever Given passed through the Suez Canal yesterday, August 20, and there is absolutely nothing to report, according to international media outlets.

“The huge container ship that blocked the Suez Canal in March – disrupting global trade – has passed back through the waterway without incident,” said the BBC.

Reuters was also one of the many news outlets around the world who reported that the Ever Given had passed through the crucial waterway, and there was nothing to report.

Both BBC News and Reuters noted that the Ever Given was one of 26 ships passing north to south through the canal, while 36 vessels were sailing through in the opposite direction at the time. None of the 61 other ships’ names were mentioned in the reports.

The Ever Given sailed from the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea en route from the United Kingdom to China, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the Suez Canal Authority.

However, the BBC and other outlets admitted they had gleaned the information via Twitter.

Reuters noted that yesterday’s voyage through the Suez Canal was the 22nd by the Ever Given. By Taiwan English News calculation that makes the 21st time the Ever Given has made the passage with nothing to report.

However, it was the first time Suez Canal Authority pilots were heard breathing an audible sigh of relief as they disembarked from the megaship.
