Nine injured in Taichung City restaurant gas explosion

Nine people were injured after a gas explosion in a beef noodle restaurant in Taichung City this evening, June 23.

Shortly before 6:00 pm, two explosions blasted the restaurant near the intersection of Fenghe and Liming Roads in Nantun District, sending shards of glass across the road, injuring staff, customers, people passing by on the street, and even injuring one person at another noodle restaurant on the other side of the road.

The Taichung City fire bureau received reports of the blast at 5:56 pm, and dispatched 13 fire appliances, 6 ambulances, and a total of 54 personnel to the scene of the explosion.

Fire bureau paramedics treated 9 people at the scene, and sent 5 of the injured to hospital. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

There were two staff, and three customers in the store at the time of the explosion.

The youngest of the injured was a three-year-old girl, who suffered superficial lacerations to her head, face, and arms. A 60-year-old woman suffered multiple lacerations to her head and right thigh, requiring sutures. Other injuries were all lacerations and bruises.

A preliminary investigation suggested that the explosion was caused by a gas leak between a gas bottle and a pipeline in the kitchen at the back of the store, leading to an accumulation of gas. Investigations are ongoing.
