Motorcyclist dies after crashing, falling down 150-meter cliff on coastal highway

A man was found dead on a beach 150 meters below his smashed motorcycle on the Su’ao-Hualien Highway this morning, January 12.

According to reports in Apple Daily, and United Daily News, the 19-year-old man, named Lin, was driving from Hsinchu to his family’s home in Hualien yesterday evening, but did not show up at the expected time. Lin’s last contact was at 8:00 pm, when he said he had reached Heping Village.

Early this morning, road maintenance workers called police after finding Lin’s motorcycle crashed near the south entrance of the Heping Tunnel at the 61.2 kilometer mark on a section of the old Suhua Highway at around 5:00 am.

Police said that the front end of the motorcycle was badly damaged, and there were obvious scratches and impact marks at the scene. It was suspected that Lin crashed into the guardrail and fell over the edge.

Search and rescue personnel from the Hualien County Fire Department rappelled down the 150 meter cliff below the accident site and found Lin’s body on the beach. Lin had suffered serious head injuries, and was obviously dead, according to reports.

Lin’s body was hoisted up to the road at around 8:00 am.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
