Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission to be Dissolved: Lim Applauds

Executive Yuan Cabinet spokesman Hsu Kuo-yung today announced that the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission will be dissolved at the end of the year. No provisions were made to fund the MTAC in the 2018 budget.

New Power Party legislator Freddy Lim applauded the move, saying that the people of Taiwan waste hundreds of millions of dollars every year funding the MTAC on the basis of a fantasy that Tibetan and Mongolian affairs are the affairs of Taiwan.

Hsu said the 49 employees of the MTAC would be re-assigned to the Ministry of Culture and Mainland Affairs Council.

On hearing that part of the MTAC will be absorbed by the Mainland Affairs Council, Lim said that neither Tibet, Mongolia, nor China are part of Taiwan, so the MAC should be be absorbed into the foreign affairs administration. If the MAC needs to exist as an independent body, it should come under the supervision of the Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee of the Legislative Yuan, Lim said.

The Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Committee has a history going back to 1636 when it was founded as the Mongolian Bureau under the Qing Dynasty. After the revolution of 1911, Tibetan Affairs were added under the government of the Republic of China.
