Marine Shot Dead in Suspected Gangster Road Rage Incident

A man in Pingtung County was shot dead by gangsters who stopped his car during what police suspect was a traffic dispute in the early hours of this morning.

The 23 year-old soldier named Ho, was returning for duty at a base in Kaohsiung City after taking a day’s leave.

After filling up at a gas station on Yanping Road, Chaozhou township at around 3:00am, Ho pulled out onto the road and a car blocked his vehicle from the front. Another car pulled up behind, and a group of men jumped out and ran up to Ho’s vehicle and smashed the windows.

At least one of the men fired shots at the driver, who was hit twice from behind. When police and paramedics arrived at the scene, Ho was laying beside his car, his head covered in blood.

Ho was rushed to a local hospital, but due to the severity of his injuries was later transferred to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung City. Two bullets were removed from his lungs, but Ho died at around 11:00am, due to internal bleeding.

Police investigators recovered three bullet casings at the scene.

Marine Corps Command said that Ho had served for five years and had a good performance record. Military officials were dispatched to the hospital to assist Ho’s family.

While preliminary investigations have led police to believe that the violent crime was the result of a traffic dispute, other motives have not been ruled out.
