Man Throws Petrol Bomb at Hospital
A man threw a petrol bomb into the lobby of a hospital in Taipei City Saturday afternoon, in order to express his dissatisfaction about surgery he received at the institution.
A man with the surname Weng, 42, was dissatisfied that he was still experiencing pain after ankle surgery he received late last year. On the afternoon of April 21, he filled a rice wine bottle with gasoline at a gas station in Danshui District, then rode his scooter to the entrance of Cheng Hsin Hospital in Beitou District.
Security monitor footage shows that around 5:00pm, Weng lit the Molotov cocktail, then hurled it through the automatic doors of the entrance. A fire flared up, but was quickly extinguished by a security guard using a fire extinguisher, and there were no casualties.
Weng fled on his scooter and went to his residence in Danshui District. Five hours later, after watching news footage, and being persuaded by a friend, Weng turned himself in to police, and confessed to the crime.
The district prosecutor sought an NT$200,000 bail order. When Weng was unable to pay the bail requirement, the prosecutor sought to keep Weng in detention due to the seriousness of the crimes, which carries a maximum sentence of more than 5 years, and had caused public panic.
However, at a hearing at the Shilin District Court, bail was set at NT$80,000. It was said that Weng did not have a criminal record for similar crimes, and there was no need for detention.
The court ruled that Weng could be released on bail, with the provision that he refrains from drinking alcohol, and does not cause jeopardy to medical staff. If Weng violates the order, he will be held in detention.
Weng is said to have a history of mental illness, and has been unemployed for more than 2 years.
