A man who shot his wife’s uncle with a pen gun in Kaohsiung City yesterday, was arrested today after police identified his car parked outside a pawnshop.

Mr Wang, 37, met his 35 year-old wife, at around noon, yesterday, outside a residential building in Gushan District to discuss terms of their divorce. Ms Wang was accompanied by her maternal uncle, Mr Guo.

Negotiations over a the divorce settlement broke down, resulting in a dispute during which Guo swung a punch at Wang. Wang pulled a pen gun out of his pocket and shot Guo in the chest.

After firing the shot, Wang dropped the pen gun and fled the scene.

Despite having been shot, Guo chased Wang, but eventually abandoned the chase due to the pain in his chest.

The shooting victim was treated in hospital for the gunshot wound, and is reported to be out of danger. The bullet was lodged in the right side of his chest just below the shoulder bone.

Police launched a manhunt for the shooter but were unable to locate him by nightfall.

Police on patrol spotted the suspect’s vehicle parked outside a pawnshop in Sanmin District at around noon, today. The officers entered the shop and arrested Wang.

Wang told police that he had slept in a park overnight, and eventually decided to turn himself in. However, he wanted to pawn his car first.

Wang said that he had purchased the pen gun online for NT$5,000, about two weeks ago, for the purpose of self-defense.
