Indonesian caregiver, employer, die in fire in Taitung City

An Indonesian national, and the daughter-in-law of the elderly woman she cared for were both declared dead, and two other people were injured when rescued from a burning mixed commercial and residential building in Taitung City in the early hours of this morning, December 21.

The Taitung City Fire Department dispatched personnel after reports of a fire at a pharmacy on Xingsheng Road at around 1:00 am. Firefighters deployed water lines to fight the fire and simultaneously dispatched personnel to search the building and rescue the occupants.

Firefighters rescued a 63-year-old pharmacist, named You, and his 90-year-old mother from the second floor of the building. You had suffered a laceration to his head, while the elderly woman was unconscious. Before being rushed to Taitung Mackay Memorial Hospital, You informed firefighters that his wife and an Indonesian caregiver were on the third and fourth floors of the residence.

When firefighters located the two women, they were both unconscious, and had lost vital signs. The two women were both later declared dead at the hospital.

According to the investigation so far, the fire started in the Pharmacy on the first floor of the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
