Illegal left-turn costs driver his life: T-boned by speeding car

One driver died, and another was injured, after a collision at an intersection in Luzhu District, Taoyuan City, this afternoon, and police urged drivers to obey traffic regulations, and slow down when approaching intersections.

At around 3:00 pm this afternoon, a 41-year-old man named Hsu, driving a Nissan March, performed an illegal left turn at the intersection of Nanqing Road and Dahua Street.

A black BMW driven by a 32-year-old man named Chiou, who had obviously not slowed down at the approach to the intersection, according to video evidence, slammed into Hsu’s “subcompact/supermini” class 2-door hatchback, sending it off the road and into a ditch.

Hsu was cut out of the mangled wreck of his vehicle unconscious, and later declared dead at the hospital.

Mr Chiou was slightly injured, suffering bruising to his limbs, according to reports. Chiou was breath-tested and found to not be affected by alcohol.

A spokesperson for the Luzhu Police Station appealed to the public to obey traffic signs and traffic regulations at intersections, and to slow down when approaching a crossroad. “Don’t let the temptation of short-term convenience turn into an irreversible tragedy,” the spokesperson said.

That BMW looks to be going ~170kph – it travelled the width of the Nissan in 1 frame (1/30th of a second) and I figure the Nissan is about 1.6m wide. Yes, the Nissan driver performed at illegal manoeuvre but the article doesn’t appear to attribute much fault to the BMW driver other than he “had obviously not slowed down at the approach to the intersection”… Ummm wtf? Is it okay to speed as long as you slow down at intersections? I think if you want to own a car that is capable of driving at 170+kph you should at least have to prove that you have the cognitive faculties to operate it safely.

Of course, all that the police are doing is “urging” the public to obey traffic laws . What an absolute joke! Haven’t the police realised that just ‘urging’ all the useless drivers doesn’t work, and that they (the police) need to get off their asses and start policing and handing out real fines. Until the do, they will just have to continue ‘urging’ idiots to obey the laws and hope for the best.
