Hotel Guests Evacuated at 3:00AM

Guests were forced to evacuate a luxury hotel in Taipei City at around 3:00AM this morning, February 25, after a fire broke out in the basement of the building.

Firefighters arrived at the Grand Formosa Regent Hotel to find thick smoke emanating from the building, but guests had not been evacuated. Firefighters requested hotel staff to evacuate the guests immediately.

Some of the more than 300 guests rushed out in bath robes, and one was seen barefoot according to a report in China Times. The temperature at the time was a little over 10°C with light rain.

Ambulance officers provided oxygen masks for two people who suffered discomfort from smoke inhalation. There were no other casualties reported.

SET News reported that 24 fire appliances and 62 firefighters were deployed at the scene.

The source of the fire was found in a basement level Chanel store.

Liberty Times Network reports that hotel staff tried to stop firefighters breaking into the Chanel boutique. The staff member pleaded that relevant personnel had been contacted and were on their way with the keys. However, as the level of smoke intensified, firefighters smashed into the store and extinguished the fire.
