Gas Cylinder Flies into Schoolyard: Smashes Wall

A nitrogen gas cylinder being handled in a recycling yard suddenly launched into the air and flew into a nearby school where it smashed a hole in a concrete wall this morning.

The cylinder flew more than 100 meters and reached a height of about 12 meters according to witnesses.

Fortunately the students were in another part of the campus for the daily flag-raising ceremony. The principle said they heard a large “bang,” during the ceremony, and on investigation found a large, red gas cylinder.

Recycling plant workers said the cylinder was being handled by a backhoe when the top was knocked off, causing it to launch.

The incident occurred at Yanping Elementary School in Chushan Township, Nantou County.
