Flood Victim’s Remains Found on Matsu Islands

A badly decomposed corpse found in the Matsu Islands is believed to belong to an 85 year old woman named Tang, who fell into flood waters in a mountainous area near Keelung City June 2.

Coast Guard officers received a report from fishermen who were gathering shellfish when they stumbled across human remains on the shore of Nangan, the southern main island of the Matsu group, at around noon yesterday.

Although the corpse was in such an advanced state of decomposition that even the gender could not be determined, the blue trousers and bunch of keys with a key ring matched the description given by Ms Tang’s family. Family members will travel to Matsu to make a formal identification tomorrow.

Ms Tang went out to check on her garden at around 8:00am June 2, the day the first meiyu front of the east Asian rainy season brought torrential showers to Taiwan. A neighbor saw her fall into a drainage culvert while she was on her way home.

The Matsu Islands are a group of 36 islands 100 nautical miles (190km) from Keelung.
