Firefighter Killed After Truck Cabin Flips Open

A firefighter driving a firetruck back to the station after a mechanical inspection died this morning after the cabin flipped open, throwing him out of the vehicle.

According to eyewitnesses, at around 9:10am, the truck approached an intersection on Dadu Road in Beitou District. When the driver applied the brakes to stop at the red light, the cabin flipped forward. The truck continued out of control for about 100 meters before crashing into a utility pole.

The 45 year-old squad leader, Lee Yaowen, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was thrown out through the windshield and run over by the truck. Lee had lost vital signs by the time paramedics arrived, and was declared dead at the hospital at 10:15am.

According to a preliminary investigation, Lee had taken the vehicle to a maintenance station in Lide Street to be inspected. Although the investigation is ongoing, it is suspected that the cabin was opened during the inspection, and that it was not secured properly before the firefighter drove away.
