Drunk Driver Pretends to be Passenger after Fatal Accident

The driver of a car that slammed into a scooter, killing the rider yesterday evening, got into the backseat and pretended to be a hapless passenger. When police arrived at the scene the man told them he didn’t know how he had gotten there or who had driven his car.

At around 7:00pm, October 30, a 37 year-old man named Liao (廖) was driving along the coastal highway between Jinshan and Danshui Districts in New Taipei City when he hit a scooter rider traveling in front of him, then slammed into a concrete barrier. The scooter rider, Ms Lu (呂), was declared dead at the hospital.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the injured Liao with his feet in the passenger compartment and his body on the road as if he had fallen out of the vehicle on impact. Liao at first pretended he remembered nothing of the accident or how he had come to be there, nor who had been driving the car.

After police interrogated Liao at the hospital, he finally admitted that he had been driving drunk. A breath test measured a blood alcohol level of 0.9mg/l (0.18%). Liao will face charges of negligent death and public endangerment.
