Drunk Driver Kills 1, Injures 2 in Taipei City

A drunk driver crashed into 3 women riding scooters in Taipei City this morning, killing one and injuring two, before hitting the sidewalk and demolishing a shopfront awning.

At 5:35am, the 23 year-old driver of a black Toyota sedan side-swiped a scooter on Keelung Road, Section 3. The driver didn’t stop, but continued at high speed, hitting another two scooters. According to witnesses cited in Apple Daily, the driver then hit the brakes, but lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the covered sidewalk, taking out the poles supporting the awning and causing it to collapse.

The three female scooter riders were rushed to hospital, but one 45 year-old woman who lost vital signs at the scene of the accident, was declared dead shortly after arrival.

Police administered an alcohol breath test on the driver which returned a reading of BrAC 1.29mg/L, more than 8 times over the legal limit.
