Drunk Brit bites MRT cop after being kicked off train

A British man who was kicked off a Taipei Metro train because he was drinking alcohol and being abusive to other passengers, allegedly bit a police officer who tried to prevent him getting back on the train, and was subsequently arrested.

The incident occurred on April 30, and the first report surfaced on the SET Network on May 8. Today, May 13, Taiwan’s major news networks, including Apple Daily, Liberty Times Network, and China Times are reporting the incident.

According to the reports, a 32-year-old man with the surname Chandler, was reported being drunk, drinking on the train, and shouting at other passengers in Taipei City’s Shilin District.

A Taipei City Police Rapid Transit Division police officer named Tsai (蔡), intercepted the train at Jiantan Station, and asked Chandler to alight from the train. Chandler resisted, and attempted to get back on the train. In the ensuing struggle, Chandler allegedly bit Tsai, leaving a NT$50-coin-sized, bloody and bruised bite injury on the 58-year-old officer’s left arm.

Three other police officers responded to Tsai’s call for backup, and Chandler was restrained and handcuffed. During his arrest, Chandler repeatedly claimed that he had a right to ride the train, and that the officers had no right to arrest him.

After being taken to Shilin District Police Station, it was found that Chandler’s visa had expired.

Chandler was charged with Obstructing an Officer in Discharge of Duties, and Injury.

It was found that Chandler had many previous records of creating a nuisance, and had previously been arrested for stealing three items of clothing from a H&M store in Wanhua District.

Chandler claimed to be an English cram school teacher working for a school in Taichung City. However, he is known to frequent Wanhua District where he was reportedly seen drunk every day. Previous run-ins with the police occurred when he broke into a youth hostel in Wanhua District when he was not a tenant there, and bullying a taxi driver. The taxi driver took Chandler to a police station but did not press charges.

Police also informed the National Immigration Agency in regards to Chandler’s visa status.
