Drivers Fined After Fast and Furious Round-Island Dash in under 9 Hours

Eleven drivers have been fined, and three indicted on charges of public endangerment, after a group of street racers made an attempt to circle the island in just 8 hours.

On the evening of March 4, 2017, the race organizers put out a call on Facebook for drivers to meet for an 8 hour round-island challenge.

Around 20 drivers assembled at a starting point at a freeway rest stop near Taipei City, and proceeded north at speeds that exceeded 240 kilometers per hour.

One driver posted pictures on Facebook showing his speedometer at 320 kph. When presented as evidence in court, the driver claimed that his speedometer was broken.

When police were alerted to the event, they formed a task-force involving police from Ilan, Hualien, Taitung, Pingtung, and other counties and cities. The task force gathered evidence, and over a two month period put a case together against the group.

Some of the cars were seen traversing zones with speed limits of 50-60 kph at speeds of 150-180 kph. Some drivers used license plate flippers in an attempt to avoid identification.

The race started at around 9:00pm and was completed at around 6:00am the next morning.

Eight of the drivers were handed fines of between NT$30,000 and NT$50,000.

Drivers Fined After Fast and Furious Round-Island Dash in under 9 Hours. Why was no vehicles impounded for a length of time say 90 days and there license suspended for a year? Taiwan give a free pass to the rich they just pay the fine and it back to normal living.
