Driver Fighting for Life After Attempting to Speed through Intersection

The driver of a little blue truck was thrown out the window before his vehicle flipped and landed on top of him after a collision in Nantou County this morning.

At around 6:00am, the traffic lights at the intersection of Nan’an Road and Zhongzheng Road in Puli township were not yet operational, and were flashing orange in one direction, meaning slow down, and red on the perpendicular, meaning stop and give way.

According to traffic monitor footage, the 70 year-old driver of the little blue truck, Mr Wu, failed to slow down or stop at the intersection. At the same time, A woman named Guo was approaching the intersection in the perpendicular direction in a white sedan. Ms Guo also failed to slow down or stop at the intersection.

The truck skidded and began to veer to the right before slamming into the sedan sideways. Mr Wu, who police suspect was not wearing a seat belt at the time, fell out of the driver’s side window upon impact as the truck began to tilt over.

The seriously injured driver was pinned under the truck. Passers by helped lift the truck off Mr Wu, but he had lost vital signs. Paramedics performed CPR and restored breathing and heartbeat, but Wu is unconscious and in a critical condition after being transferred to a hospital in Taichung City.

Mr Wu’s wife who was a passenger in the truck sustained non life-threatening injuries. The three occupants of the sedan were uninjured.
