Driver dead after car crushed by train

A man died after crashing his car and landing on railway tracks before being hit by a train in Chiayi County last night, April 7.

At around 11:40 pm a 40-year-old resident of Tainan City, named Hsu was traveling northbound on Provincial Highway 1 in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a roadside tree. Hsu’s black Toyota Altis sedan flew over a 1.5-meter-high fence onto railway tracks, and was then hit by a train and dragged for around 200 meters.

According to the train driver, the car just suddenly appeared in front of the train and he didn’t have time to brake before hitting the vehicle. There were around 30 passengers on board the train at the time of the accident.

Hsu was left trapped in the severely crushed vehicle. Taiwan Railway Administration cut power to the track section so firefighters could safely work on the rescue attempt. However, it took firefighters 3.5 hours to free Hsu from the mangled wreck, and he was obviously dead by the time they reached him.

The track was finally cleared shortly after 5:00 am.
