Driver crashes into traffic sign then continues driving with sign stuck on car

Road users in Taichung City and Changhua County were stunned to see a car being driven on an expressway with a traffic divider sign mounted on the hood earlier this week, and a man went to a police station today to explain what had happened after seeing the story reported on TV news.

Multiple drivers uploaded video footage to social media of an SUV on Provincial Highway 74 heading southbound with the traffic divider stuck to the front of the vehicle. Readers were perplexed as to what reason or purpose could be behind the incident. Was it a mobile traffic divider sign? Was it some kind of decorative accessory?

Then someone uploaded video from a surveillance camera that showed what appeared to be the same SUV crashing into a traffic divider near Nantun District in Taichung City. The car stopped for a few seconds, then the driver is seen backing up, then proceeding onto the expressway onramp.

At around noon today, Friday, December 2, a 71-year-old man, named Lai, went to a police station in Taichung City to explain what had happened. Lai said that he had been heading back to his home in Changhua City late in the afternoon, when he was blinded by the sun and crashed into the traffic divider. Lai said that he didn’t know how to deal with the situation, so he just continued to drive home to Changhua City.

Police said that Lai will be fined up to NT$24,000 for violating Article 43 of of Traffic Regulations “dangerous driving,” and up to NT$3,000 for violating Article 62 -leaving the scene of an accident.
