Coast Guard to the Rescue of Orchid Island Test Candidates

The coast guard dispatched a patrol boat to Orchid Island yesterday to pick up two students who feared they would miss out on the College Entrance Examination after ferry services and flights to the island were cancelled due to bad weather.

More than 136, 000 test candidates will sit for the exams today, Friday, January 26, and tomorrow, January 27. The tests are taken by students in their last year of high school, and are an important part of the college admission process.

Two students with the family name Hsieh risked missing the exams until family members contacted the Coast Guard Patrol office in Taitung and requested assistance. The patrol office dispatched patrol boat PP-10057 to pick up the pair and delivered them to Taitung at around 8:15 pm last night.

Orchid Island is an outlying island with a population of 4,000, the majority being members of the Tao aboriginal people. Students attending senior high school usually reside in Taitung City during the week, as the trip to and from the island requires a three hour ferry trip.

The examination center in Taitung City will see 879 students sit for the tests today and tomorrow.
