China: The USA trying to create a Taiwan Strait crisis by comparing Taiwan to Ukraine

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Wang Wenbin claimed today that some people in the United States are deliberately making an analogy between Taiwan and Ukraine with “sinister intentions” in an attempt to “create a new crisis” in the Taiwan Strait.

The Financial Times reported on the 25th that Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command Admiral John Aquilino during a visit to Australia warned in an interview that as the Chinese People’s Liberation Army is gradually increasing pressure on Taiwan, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine highlights the serious threat posed to Taiwan.

Chinese media outlet The Paper reported that when asked about the statement at a regular press conference of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs today, Wang Wenbin reiterated China’s position that “the Taiwan issue and the Ukraine issue are fundamentally different, and the two cannot be compared.”

Wang Wenbin said that some people in the United States deliberately compared the Taiwan and Ukraine issues, not because they are not familiar with the issues, but because of “sinister intentions.” The purpose is to try to “create a new crisis” in the Taiwan Strait, and serve the US’s own geostrategic and economic interests at the expense of the well-being of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and regional peace and stability.

He declared that Taiwan is not Ukraine and that “the determination and will of the Chinese people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity are unbreakable”.

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, Wang Wenbin criticized the US for failing to review its own responsibilities, making efforts to cool the situation, persuading peace and promoting talks, and constantly “adding fuel to the fire”.
