Burnout Driver Fined and Ordered to Class

A man who performed a burnout in front of a scenically located Starbucks cafe in Chiayi County October 4 was fined NT$5.000 and ordered to attend an environmental education class after the driver was identified last month.

The European chalet style building in Minxiong Township is a hot-spot for sightseers to take photos to upload to social media, and has been dubbed “Taiwan’s most beautiful Starbucks.” But the same social media users were indignant after pictures and video of the burnout were uploaded to Facebook group in early October.

Taiwan’s media gave blanket-coverage of the event, with Apple Daily referring to the action as a “malicious burnout.” Social media users said the man had “an unethical heart.”

The Chiayi Environmental Protection Bureau this week identified and located the driver of the customized Dodge Challenger muscle car. The EPB said that Huang was liable to a fine of between NT$5,000 to NT$100,000 for breaching air pollution laws. The EPB chose to impose a fine at the lower end of the scale as it was Huang’s first offence, and he had shown remorse and apologized for the incident. They also ordered Huang to attend an hour-long environmental seminar organized by the EPB.
