Body of graduate student found in flooded pavilion at scenic reservoir

The body of a young man who went missing at Zengwen Reservoir in Chiayi County yesterday was found stuck in a flooded pavilion this afternoon, Thursday, August 12.

The post-graduate student from National Cheng Kung University in Tainan City, named Lin, visited Zengwen Reservoir Scenic Area with a friend yesterday afternoon, August 11.

Lin went missing while trying to retrieve a phone he had accidentally dropped in the water at around 4:00 pm, according to reports.

Chiayi County Fire Department dispatched six search and rescue teams yesterday, and more than 20 people from the Chiayi County Rescue Association joined the search this morning.

At 2:00 pm today, it was reported that Lin’s body had been found stuck against the ceiling of the first floor of the flooded pavilion.

The three-floor pavilion at Dapu Township Lakeside Park had been flooded to a level above the second floor at the time the man went missing, search and rescue personnel said.

While the area had been cordoned off at the time, it is believed that the two university students disregarded the warning signs, swam out to the pavilion, and were standing on the flooded second floor when Lin dropped his phone.

Rescue personnel suspect that after Lin dived in to retrieve his phone, he may have attempted to surface after being swept under the second floor and was unable to find his way out in the turbid water.
