Bipartisan advisory group urges US Congress to get real on deterring China’s aggression against Taiwan

A bipartisan congressional advisory group tasked with making an annual report on US-China relations urged US lawmakers to take urgent measures to strengthen the credibility of US military deterrence to potential Chinese aggression against Taiwan, Wednesday, November 17.

The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC) warned that a lack of clarity in U.S. policy could could fail to deter the Chinese Communist Party from opportunistic aggression against Taiwan.

The report came just a day after a high profile meeting between US President Joe Biden, and Paramount Leader of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping.

The report urged Congress to authorize and appropriate funds for Taiwan to purchase defense articles from the United States, finance the deployment of cruise and ballistic missiles and other munitions in the Indo-Pacific, and increase funding for surveillance.

“The PLA has already achieved the capabilities needed to conduct an air
and naval blockade, cyberattacks, and missile strikes against Taiwan. PLA leaders now likely assess they have, or will soon have, the initial capability needed to conduct a high-risk invasion of Taiwan if ordered to do so by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leaders,” the report noted.

“Xi Jinping’s higher tolerance for risk and desire to establish a lasting legacy could also contribute to a decision by China’s leadership to attack Taiwan despite U.S. warnings.”

“A deterrence failure is most likely to occur if Chinese leaders believe the United States is not militarily capable of or politically willing to intervene, or if they interpret ambiguities in U.S. policy to mean that opportunistic Chinese aggression against Taiwan will not provoke a decisive U.S. response.”

Xi Jinping is of course a long-time member of the Chinese Communist Party. Joe Biden and his evil seed Hunter are long-time honorary members of the same party. How do we know? By the most reliable means available: their words and their actions.
