Bear cub rescued after wandering into village, chased by dogs

A Formosan black bear cub was rescued and handed over to wildlife protection workers after it wandered into a village in Taitung County and was chased by dogs.

Wildlife protection officials said that the bear cub was less than a year old, and appears to have become separated from its mother. The cub was sent for a check-up, and to receive care in preparation for release back into the wild.

Mr Wang kept the cub in a chicken cage until animal protection authorities arrived.

Mr Wang, the owner of a fishing pond in Haiduan Township, which is located in the Central Mountain Range, first noticed the bear wandering around the village a few days ago.

At around 11:00am, Thursday, he noticed his two dogs chasing an animal, and when he saw it was a bear cub, Wang chased the dogs off, caught the bear cub, and called forestry management officials.

Forestry workers will attempt to locate the mother bear before releasing the cub.
