Bank robber who shot guard Arrested in just 29 hours

A man suspected of shooting a security guard during a bank robbery in Taipei City, Monday, March 30, was arrested in Taoyuan City, yesterday, March 31.

Chen Jian-hui ( 陳劍輝 ), 54, was arrested in Longtan District at around 3:00 pm yesterday afternoon.

After tracing Chen’s whereabouts, police followed Chen in an unmarked police vehicle. When Chen pulled into the parking area in front of a convenience store, the officers blocked his vehicle and rushed in to make the arrest.

A search of Chen’s vehicle turned up NT$600,000 of the NT$780,000 stolen from the Panhsin Bank, as well as a modified pistol and 28 rounds of ammunition.

The firearm in Chen’s possession was not the one used in the bank robbery, during which Chen shot a security guard in the thigh, then fired 5 shots into the ceiling.

Police are still trying to find what they describe as an M4 submachine gun believed to have been used in the robbery, according to United Daily News. Liberty Times, on the other hand, claim that police believe the weapon used is an MP5.

Chen told police that he had borrowed the submachine gun from a friend in Taichung City, and had returned it immediately following the robbery. Chen also said that he had committed the robbery in order to repay debts, and had already used NT$180,000 for that purpose.

However, police investigators tracing Chen’s movements believe that he did not go to Taichung City, and suspect that Chen is lying.

Chen was found to have multiple criminal records for previous offenses, including the armed robbery of a lottery store in 2012. Chen had served a prison sentence for the robbery, and was released three years ago, according to United Daily News.
